Magnesium corrodes through a well-characterized reaction that releases Mg2+ ions, magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen gas, at rates that can be tuned and controlled to align with the healing timeline of different surgical indications.
Done properly, the implant supports the bone while the bone needs help, and then exits the system once healing is complete.
