Key Advantages
The major advantages to accuracy comes from OsseoLabs' surgical guides equipped with pre-drilled holes, cutting planes, and precised manufactured, customized implants. Earlier this year, the clinical results were promising. This technology allows surgeons like myself to evaluate all screw placements before installation regarding their positions, lengths, including the patient’s anatomical structure.
We used a 3D-printed titanium mesh plate for a maxilla case, and the post-operation result was very precise and outstanding. The only issue I encountered was because of my in-experience working with customized devices, resulted in less soft tissue in-growth to porous surface than anticipated. However, the learning curve is not steep whereas I picked up the application of the devices very easily.
Benefits to Patients
For facial reconstruction procedures, precise alignment ensures the condyle remains in its original position, preventing unintended translations and post-op movement issues. Compared to conventional methods, OsseoLabs' outcomes are superior in terms of surgical outcomes and patient recovery. For instance, in similar condylar cases at Trang Hospital, conventional plates led to post-op occlusion changes, severely affected the patient’s life, whereas OsseoLabs’ devices maintained alignment perfectly, precisely resulted in harmonious occlusion with no relapse.
Impact on Surgical Costs
For facial reconstructions, OsseoLabs can reduce surgery time by roughly 30%, saving up to 4 – 6 hours which can free up the operation rooms for other cases and improve hospital’s efficiency. In orthognathic cases, pre-designed plates eliminate the time required for manual bending, resulting in significant time savings. While the costs for reconstructions are reasonable and align well with DRG reimbursements, orthognathic surgeries can be borderline cosmetic.
Areas for Improvement
The cutting guide designs could provide more visibility, which will further reduce surgery time. Integrating surgical planning tools that functions like Dolphin into OsseoLabs’ workflow would definitely be a game-changer, significantly reducing pre-op preparation.
The cutting guide could benefit from additional features like metal sleeves to improve precision during drilling or cutting to prevent foreign body. Communication about design adjustments has also improved significantly with OsseoLabs using captured images from software for discussions.
